Moving in the Calgary area is rarely just a Calgary move. Most of our crews spend at least a few days a month outside city limits, loading or unloading in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere, or one of the smaller hamlets that ring the city. Greater Calgary is a real region, not just a city with edges, and the surrounding communities have grown into places people genuinely want to live, not just commute from.
You Move Me Calgary serves the full Calgary Metropolitan Region. We move families and businesses in and out of every one of the major commuter towns, plus the smaller hamlets in Rocky View County and Foothills County. This guide walks you through what each community is like, how far each is from Calgary, and what makes moving in or out of each one different from a straightforward in-city move.
What Are the Best Communities to Live in Around Calgary?
The best communities to live in around Calgary depend on what you want out of daily life. Each of the major commuter towns has its own personality. Cochrane leans rugged and western, with mountain views. Okotoks feels small-town and family-focused. Airdrie has grown into a city of its own. Chestermere has lakefront living. Strathmore is the most affordable of the bunch.
Here is how the main Calgary-area communities break down:
Airdrie
Airdrie sits about 25 kilometres north of downtown Calgary, just off the Queen Elizabeth II Highway. It is a city in its own right, with a population over 80,000 and a steady stream of new neighbourhoods like Coopers Crossing, King’s Heights, Bayside, and Ravenswood. The commute to Calgary runs 25 to 35 minutes when traffic flows well, and Airdrie is closer to Calgary International Airport than most of Calgary itself. Moves in Airdrie are usually straightforward suburban moves with wide streets, good truck access, and newer developments with clear addressing.
Cochrane
Cochrane is about 30 kilometres northwest of downtown Calgary on Highway 1A, sitting at the foothills of the Rockies. With a population around 38,000, it is one of the fastest-growing towns in Alberta. Cochrane is known for its mountain views, the famous Big Hill, and a strong western character. Most homes are single-family with newer subdivisions like Sunset Ridge, Riversong, and Gleneagles. Moving in Cochrane can involve steep grades, so your crew should know what they are working with before truck day. Traffic through the centre of town can also bottleneck during peak hours.
Okotoks
Okotoks sits 35 to 45 kilometres south of Calgary on Highway 2A. It has a population around 32,000 and is one of Alberta’s youngest communities by average age, with a family-focused, small-town feel. Okotoks is known for its parks, its art scene, and the famous Big Rock erratic glacial boulder. Most moves here involve single-family homes in established neighbourhoods, plus newer developments on the south end of town. Commute time to Calgary runs 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic.
Chestermere
Chestermere is the closest Calgary commuter community geographically, sitting immediately east of Calgary’s city limits along Highway 1. It is a city of about 23,000 known for its lake, the Chestermere Lake waterfront properties, and a growing roster of newer subdivisions like Kinniburgh, Lakeside Green, and Westmere. Lakefront homes can have tighter access and HOA rules, so plan ahead if you are moving into a waterfront property.
Strathmore
Strathmore is about 40 kilometres east of Calgary along the Trans-Canada Highway. It has a population around 14,000 and is one of the most affordable communities in the region, with detached home prices well below Calgary’s average. Strathmore is a working town with a hospital, easy access to Wheatland County’s agricultural areas, and a quieter pace than the commuter towns to the north and west. Moves are typically straightforward single-family or acreage moves.
Balzac, Priddis, and the Smaller Hamlets
Beyond the major commuter towns, the Calgary area includes a ring of smaller hamlets that you may not see on a typical tourist map. Balzac sits 24 kilometres north of Calgary in Rocky View County, immediately next to CrossIron Mills mall. Priddis is a small hamlet about 25 kilometres southwest in Foothills County. Bragg Creek is a hamlet southwest of the city, known as a gateway to Kananaskis Country. These smaller communities often involve gravel road access, longer driveways, and acreage properties. The right crew brings the right equipment and the right amount of patience.
How Far Are the Surrounding Communities From Calgary?
The surrounding Calgary communities range from immediately adjacent (Chestermere) to about 45 minutes away (Okotoks and Strathmore). Most of the commuter towns sit between 25 and 45 kilometres from downtown Calgary, which translates to a 25 to 50 minute drive depending on time of day and road conditions.
Here is the breakdown by community:
- Chestermere: Immediately east of city limits, roughly 20 km from downtown Calgary, 25 to 30 minute drive
- Balzac: 24 km north of downtown, 20 to 25 minute drive
- Airdrie: 25 km north of downtown, 25 to 35 minute drive
- Priddis: 25 km southwest of downtown, 30 to 40 minute drive
- Cochrane: 30 km northwest of downtown, 30 to 40 minute drive
- Bragg Creek: 35 km southwest of downtown, 35 to 45 minute drive
- Okotoks: 35 to 45 km south of downtown, 35 to 50 minute drive
- Strathmore: 40 km east of downtown, 40 to 50 minute drive
Travel times can stretch significantly during peak commute hours or in winter. Deerfoot Trail, Stoney Trail, and Crowchild Trail all see heavy traffic between 7 to 9 in the morning and 4 to 6 in the evening. For a moving day, scheduling an early start usually avoids the worst of the traffic. The Calgary Metropolitan Region is officially defined as a group of eight member municipalities working together on regional planning. You can read more about the Calgary Metropolitan Region and its member communities on the City of Calgary’s planning page.
Do Calgary Movers Serve the Surrounding Communities?
Yes, You Move Me Calgary serves the full Calgary Metropolitan Region, including all of the major commuter towns and the smaller hamlets around the city. We move households and businesses in and out of Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere, Strathmore, Balzac, Priddis, Bragg Creek, and other communities in Rocky View County and Foothills County as part of our regular service area.
That said, not every Calgary moving company actually services these areas reliably. Some only list surrounding towns on their website and then add hidden travel fees or refuse the job at the last minute. A few things to ask before you book any Calgary-area mover:
- Is the destination community a regular part of their service area, or an exception?
- How is travel time billed for moves outside Calgary city limits?
- Are their crews W-2 employees, or day labourers brought in for the job?
- Do they have experience with acreage moves, gravel road access, or HOA-gated communities if your move involves those?
- Are they insured to operate outside Calgary proper?
For a deeper look at what to budget for a Calgary-area move, see our guide on how much it costs to hire a moving company in Calgary. Pricing for surrounding communities is usually the same hourly rate as a Calgary move, with a small additional travel fee for the longer crew transit time.
What Should You Know About Moving Day in a Calgary-Area Community?
Moving day in a Calgary-area community goes smoother when you plan for three things specific to the region: winter weather, longer commute times for your crew, and the specifics of suburban or rural properties.
Winter weather. Calgary winters are real, and they hit harder in the surrounding communities. Cochrane, Bragg Creek, and the foothills areas tend to be a few degrees colder and a bit windier than central Calgary. Country roads are not always plowed first. Driveways and laneways can ice over fast. Schedule winter moves for late morning when temperatures are at their highest, keep a clear path from the truck to the door, and let your crew know about any access challenges in advance.
Crew commute time. Moves outside Calgary include the time it takes your crew to drive to the pickup or drop-off address. Most reputable movers, including us, charge a flat travel fee rather than billing the hourly rate for the entire crew commute. Ask up front so there are no surprises on the invoice.
Suburban and rural property specifics. Surrounding communities often involve features you do not see in Calgary itself: gated HOA neighbourhoods (common in Airdrie and Chestermere), gravel road access (typical for acreage properties in Foothills and Rocky View counties), longer driveways with limited truck turning radius, well water and septic systems, and lakefront properties with strict moving rules (Chestermere lakefront in particular). Tell your moving company about any of these features when you book so they can plan the right crew size and equipment.
What About Moving to Banff or Canmore?
Banff and Canmore are popular destinations for Calgary-area moves, but they sit in a different category. Both towns are in the Canadian Rockies, well outside the Calgary Metropolitan Region. Canmore is about 105 kilometres west of Calgary and Banff is about 125 kilometres further along the Trans-Canada Highway. A move to either is treated as a long-distance regional move with its own pricing and timing considerations.
We do serve Banff and Canmore as part of our regional service area. Mountain moves involve longer drive times, occasional weather delays in winter, and sometimes Parks Canada access considerations in Banff (since Banff is inside a national park). If you are planning a move to Banff or Canmore, get in touch early so we can scope the timing properly.
